Pascal Bernier tackles major contemporary issues such as ecology, industry, techno-science, pornography… His photos, videos, sculptures, paintings and installations are full of humor and disenchantment. He creates metaphors with a theatrical accent, modern fables, sometimes akin to still lifes, even allegorical representations of death. And animals often take center stage. They are sometimes photographed or filmed, integrated into installations, or presented as sculptures (via taxidermy, bandages, etc.) All in a very pop spirit. One of his best-known series is WWF, a squadron of butterflies with military roundels that alternately provokes smiles and painful empathy. He explains the starting point for these works: “According to theories describing chaotic systems, the flapping of a butterfly’s wings can eventually cause a hurricane. Waging war with butterflies may one day be the ultimate weapon of chaos strategists”.
