Photographer and video artist Karine Marenne has been working in video installation and performance for several years. Her work focuses on questions of femininity, male/female relationships and the power games that are part and parcel of human nature. Mixing codes and constructing absurd situations, derision is often her weapon of choice. Her choice of extras (train attendants, dancers, guards, artists, etc.) testifies to her interest in activities that emphasize human relationships, an interest that is reflected in the way she designs her participatory installations. “Museal Fitness” is part of the We love art project, and is the fruit of a collaboration between two artists who initially didn’t know each other, Roberta Miss and Karine Marenne, for the A4 exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. They confronted their points of view and mixed their respective disciplines, turning this encounter into an artistic and relational adventure.
As a starting point, a slogan: “I love art”. A statement as simple as it is ambiguous, like its model “I love New York”, which behind its candid optimism now poorly conceals a social reality that is sadly far removed from the American dream… In the same way, the apparent naivety of the slogan “I love art” implies a critical approach to the art world, its rivalries and its commercial logic.
