Paul Devens is a multidisciplinary artist who creates sculptures, performances, videos, sound and architectural installations. Some of his latest works are entirely sound-based. These performances are live acts or concerts made from a computer generating sounds, recordings and improvisations.
In many of his works, the tension between the material object and abstract sounds creates new dimensions of meaning. The element of surprise is another aspect of his work that makes it so appealing. Throughout his work, the sense of uncertainty and surprise produced by an unexpected situation is always a central element.
Devens’ work deals with the everyday mythology of stereotypical ideals of industrial society. By relocating and reinterpreting objects from popular culture, the artist seeks to emphasize an everyday reality that surrounds us at all times and that we tend to take for granted. The artist is particularly interested in the way this reality is perceived, and in the codes contained in the structures through which it is communicated.
Moped 2 was built from scratch, the garish colors replaced by the utilitarian color of hospital machines. It runs on an electric motor, but the short length of the cable that connects it to the socket strips the bike of its romantic connotations of freedom and independence.
