David Pirotte originally wanted to become a comic book artist. In his paintings, he uses images of superheroes and pop stars. His canvases mix faces and objects deliberately blurred by material effects. Pirotte has already exhibited his work in Liège, Brussels, Sedan and New York. The SPACE Collection’s untitled work, a Trabi, the iconic car of the former East Germany, was painted in 2015, the year of the release of Jacques Donjean’s film “Last exit to Berlin”, dedicated to David Pirotte and one of his sources of inspiration, the German capital. Indeed, Pirotte’s iconography abounds with references to German music (Nina Hagen, Can, Kraftwerk…), films shot in Berlin (especially Win Wenders’ “Wings of Desire”) or, in his style, German neo-expressionist painters such as Baselitz, Lüpertz and Penck.
