Figurative without being realistic, Charlotte Beaudry’s paintings are simple compositions, with subjects presented head-on. Critical of the culture of spectacle, the artist seeks to question the status of the image and the way it is used by the media and advertising. To this end, she hides certain details, making reality both recognizable and strange.
In his most recent series, the ordinary object or subject plays an important role. Isolated on a plain background, the removal of context and the highlighting of details give the object an unusual dimension. His non-narrative approach to painting seems to favor a physical relationship with space. The red briefs are a telling example: the male model has been erased, and it’s through the hyper-realistic treatment of volumes and materials that the painting reveals its intensity.
