A graduate in plastic arts from the Académie des Beaux-arts de Liège, Eric Deprez already has numerous group and solo exhibitions to his credit. He practices charcoal drawing and oil painting. In his small-format drawings, he searches for the lines that make sense to him. Eric Deprez’s abstract painting is in the expressionist tradition. His ability to give a contemporary sensibility to traditional pictorial means gives his work a great pictorial quality. The large-format oil paintings are gestural, with the paint accumulating in successive layers until it becomes a monochrome surface, where the pictorial material takes precedence until it becomes the main subject. Action and chance are part of the game, with gestural lines and accidents taking on greater importance.
