A 2007 graduate of the Ecole de Recherche Graphique (ERG) in Brussels, Jonathan De Winter creates his sculptures using raw, industrial and recycled materials. Sometimes built on a large scale, his objects are often inhabited by music, which plays a very important role in his approach, since the search for fusion between the two disciplines (sculpture and music) is a constant feature of his career. The SPACE Collection has acquired a piece in which he inserts a snare drum inside a box supported by four tree trunks. During performances, or when the spectator dares to turn a knob, the roll can be triggered. The combination of visual and sound installation creates a new energy. Jonathan De Winter has taken part in several exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, notably curated by Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Juan d’Outremont, Koen Theys and the Komplot curatorial collective. Other projects include Bijective harder than it looks, at the Georges Pompidou contemporary art center in Cajarc, Digitalis off shore, in Brussels, The black yssu, at Ystads, Sweden, and Harde klontjes, at Galerie Sébastien Ricou in Brussels. He received the Young Artists prize from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles in 2013.
