The barge industry has long been one of Thuin’s major economic activities. Traces of this recent past can still be seen in the Rivage district, where boatmen have made a point of placing an anchor, the name of their barge, etc. on their facades. True to their practice of investigation, the artist duo sought out traces of the traditions of the boatmen, the former open-air swimming pool “Thuin plage”, nautical jousting, the ducasse, the bouloir game and other events that have long punctuated the Rivage district. For Fluide, they are creating a new monument to inland navigation. It’s a miniature sailboat, the image of which evokes memories of escape and travel. But this one is characterized by the reuse of materials, the recycling of data and a mix of references also linked to discotheques and other places of contemporary hedonism that the two artists have been identifying for several years. The boat’s sails, for example, are car windscreens which, aligned and superimposed on two masts, recall the long queues in discotheque parking lots. In self-adhesive vinyl, various logos and typos take up the names of places that we quickly understand are nightclubs. Somewhere between anecdote and formalism, popular (even kitsch) inspiration and history, their installation is intended to be documentary, compiling various Thudinian party venues. The final touch to this strongly connoted installation is a beer pump on the bow of the ship, a reminder not only of the festive dimension but also of the event-driven, ephemeral culture of the intervention.
