Space Collection

La Space (Société publique d′Art contemporain-Europe) is a project developed since 2002 by Liège sculptor Alain De Clerck. Materialised by a first work of art in Liège, then by a second in Maastricht in 2013, its aim is to support artists through the creation and enhancement of a cross-border collection. It brings contemporary art within everyone′s reach by involving the joint participation of citizens, public authorities, businesses and the associative network in its construction.

Currently numbering 152, the works (paintings, installations, sculptures, engravings, drawings, videos, etc.) are acquired through interactive sculptures placed in public spaces. In Liège, the SPAC (Sculpture Publique d’Aide Culturelle) is located in Féronstrée, at the foot of the Échevinat de la Culture. The work, which has been inactive since August 2021 due to tramway works, features a special concept: when a passer-by inserts a one-euro coin into the interactive terminal attached to the sculpture, it triggers a flame at the top of its steel arch. He or she also receives either a ticket with contemporary poetry or, once in ten times at random, a voucher to be exchanged for cultural activities in Liège. The money raised, augmented by sponsorship, is used to enrich and promote the collection.

This collection, which explores a diverse range of media, presents the work of Belgian and international artists, both emerging and established. It aims to highlight contemporary artistic trends while tackling a range of societal issues, combining purely poetic creations with politically engaged works.

Since 2020, SPACE Collection has organized its exhibitions, events and conferences at New Space, a 500 m² warehouse that acts as a veritable center for art and experimentation. Off-site exhibitions are also organized.
