Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Maastricht (ABKM), young Maastricht artist Sara Bachour made a name for herself in 2015 with the video “Fables”, for which she won the following awards: Tent Academy Awards, Gilbert de Bontridder Prijs and Jan Naaijkens Price. This success also earned her a showing at Depot Basel. Inspired by Ovid, this work tells the story of how and why animals were transformed into domestic objects. The idea came to Sara spontaneously when she discovered these objects in a second-hand store. “They stood out for their great subtlety: their kitschy, insignificant appearance, their lack of flamboyance. Their form was particularly interesting because it seemed to have no connection with the object’s function. This led me to consider the concepts of function, use and their interactions. GM
