Press and
cartoonist, Phil is best known for his
bistrot sketches created in situ on
beer cartons (also known as coasters) or on white
paper tablecloths. These stories are
compiled in the Chopines ardentes series
published on a self-publishing basis, the title of which highlights
Liège’s roots (the city is
nicknamed the Cité ardente). A key figure
in local independent publishing (
C4 newspaper, Mycose fanzine…), Phil is also a
regular contributor to the La Balise
cartoon column in the weekly Spirou in the late
1990s, and a pillar of the French magazine
Psikopat. Sometimes reminiscent of Reiser in
his keen sense of observation, his humor
both wry and tender, and the effectiveness of
his line, his work is also published
regularly in Spain. In the
drawing acquired by SPACE in 2006, he plays on the
sonic kinship between Winny and Willy, as well as
between Demeyer and “le maïeur” to
sketch the burgomaster (or maïeur) of Liège
bathing in the Meuse surrounded by
teddy bears.
