Jacques Lizène, the self-deprecating champion of “art nul et médiocre” – self-defined. “I arrived too late in art history,” the artist explains in all seriousness. “So I decided to go back to the beginning of history. So, for example, I produce small, mediocre drawings in a style I call ‘neo-rupestral’. Many avant-garde artists have defined themselves as visionaries. I’m probably a visionary sometimes, but I can’t say exactly when. A subversive artist, recognized both in Belgium and abroad, mixing video, sound, objects, photography and painting, Jacques Lizène creates disturbing works that go against artistic norms, aesthetics and good taste. Realize that Picasso, who is reputed to have painted everything, never drew an airplane, and consequently strive to draw airplanes in Picasso’s style, with enough clumsiness (or “mediocrity”) to make it impossible to be mistaken.
