For Swennen, a painting doesn't need to be \"emotional\" or \"understood\": the primary purpose of painting is, quite simply, to paint. Everything - form, color, subject - comes from the outside. As a poet before he was a painter, it's no coincidence that language plays an essential role in his practice. Although his work varies considerably in terms of scale, style and materials, it can be seen as an ongoing exploration of the nature and problems of painting (its potential and its limits), of the fundamental question of what to paint (the subject) and how to paint it (the technique). The way he treats motifs - taking them as he finds them, high or low, and manipulating them at will - is a kind of visual poetry that harks back to his early days as a writer. Freely associative and above all humorous, Swennen's paintings explore the relationship between symbols, legibility, meaning and pictorial treatment. <\/p>\n
Walter Swennen (b. 1946, Brussels, Belgium) lives and works in Brussels.
